(Fort Lauderdale, FL) – Rod Jabin and his Ramrod crew, which included Richard Clarke, beat 20 top Melges 32 teams and won the 2010 Melges 32 Gold Cup Regatta this weekend. This is the second year in a row that Ramrod has won the title. Other members of the team included Chris Larson and Curtis Florence, with whom Clarke won the 2009 Melges 24 Worlds, Ray Wulff, Scott Holmgren and Vann Wallke. Read more …
Richard Clarke was awarded British Columbia’s Sailor of the Year Award at a December 4th dinner in Vancouver, B.C. Among Clarke’s outstanding sailing achievements during 2010 were his podium finishes at the 2009 Star North American Championship and the 2010 Star Western Hemisphere Championship and a several US-IRC events. Canada’s Richard Clarke and Philippe Kahn were the first to finish overall and doublehanded in the 2007 Transpac and the 2008 Pacific Cup in an Open 50. The 2001/01 Volvo Ocean Race helmsman/trimmer is spicing up his 2011 big boat and Olympic sailing programs with offshore racing in the Pacific this spring and summer. Vela Veloce, Richard Oland’s Southern Cross 52 won the IRC 52 Class at the 2010 IRC Fall Championship Regatta hosted by Annapolis Yacht Club from October 29-31. Vele Veloce was second overall to Dan Meyers’ Numbers, a Judel-Vrolijk 66.5, in the IRC 1 Division. With this week’s performance, Vela Veloce clinched the 2010 US-IRC Gulf Stream Series, which comprises 19 events throughout the year, including the Fort Lauderdale to Key West Race, Key West Race Week, the Newport to Bermuda Race, and the US-IRC Long Island Sound Championship. Canadian Olympic Sailing Team member, Tyler Bjorn was awarded the Marin de L’annee, aka Sailor of the Year, trophy by the Quebec Sailing Federation. The award was presented during the Quebec Sailing Federation’s 40th Anniversary Gala at the Montreal Olympic Stadium’s funicular. Read more …
Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn were in the boatyard at the Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy after having watched the Star Class’ Medal Race from the sidelines. (They were in very good company and it was nothing to be ashamed of.) Seeing that he had an audience, of one, but nonetheless, one with a camera, he improvised a performance and an announcement.
“There you have it. It’s official now,” he said as he gave rain drenched Tyler Bjorn a kiss. “We’re doing an Olympic campaign together.” Read more …
Tommy was our coach for the 2009 Star North Americans. He did a great job working with us before the regatta. It was our first Star regatta together. Once we rigged the boat we focused on teamwork. We did a lot of tacks, gybes and practice mark roundings before the rest of the fleet arrived. It all paid off. We saw a little bit of everything from bright and beautiful summer conditions to that really wet, wavy and windy day when Tommy was the hero and we didn’t even know it. Read more …
Tommy Wharton, Director of Sport Performance at the Canadian Sport Centre Ontario, was awarded The Hanson Rescue Award by the US Sailing Safety-at-Sea Committee. Wharton, was at his final regatta as a Canadian National Sailing Team Coach, when he rescued two men adrift in Long Island Sound during the 2009 Star North American Championship. Read more …
